Ruth: I love breakfast in Germany! I love eating It, and when I’m not eating it, I love anticipating it. There is a point on any cycle trip where the pleasures of food become far more important than any number of amazing tourist sights. In Germany, breakfast has become our main meal. Oh course we have also dined on Schnizel, spätzle and other tasty dinner items, but breakfast is where the real calories are. Oh and forget yummy Canadian back bacon, the bacon here is divine. In France I was always fond of a good baguette, but the range of fabulous breads here is a lovely treat.
Our buffet yesterday morning was so substantial that we decided beer and cake was all we needed for dinner.
In the few moments when we are not eating, there are some wonderful things to see around Ulm.
Gordon: On the way to Ulm we took a trail variant that follows the Blau river valley. It was an excellent choice. The source of the Blau is a spring fed pool with an unusual blue colour. In conjunction with a nearby Benedictine abbey, it is a major tourist attraction.
A highlight of the abbey is the Monk’s Bathhouse (built circa 1510) but we were not fortunate enough to see a monk bathing while we were there.
Ulm is famous for a few things, which include being the birthplace of Albert Einstein, and having the tallest church steeple in Europe. You can climb the 700+ steps to a narrow walkway more than 500 feet above the street. I went up as soon as it opened this morning. The light was beautiful, and I had the steeple almost to myself. It was lovely.
Here is a photo of the final stairway.
