I have wanted to visit this place for over 40 years. Of course I didn’t know anything about the hilltown of Pourrières then, but this is the place nonetheless. I am so excited I can hardly believe our good luck. I had no idea when I booked this place that it is in the valley below the mountain of Sainte Victoire. This mountain was the subject of so many of Cezanne’s paintings. Forty-three years ago I took a Modern Art course that helped me to discover my great love for the paintings done in that period. Cezanne is largely credited as the father of modern art and the artist that bridged Impressionism and Modernism. Both Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse described Cezanne as the “father of us all.”
The mountain is beautiful, but I must admit it was a bit disappointing to discover that it does not glow with orange, turquoise, yellow and green. How does someone imagine those colours?
Tomorrow we continue into Aix-en-Provence, Cezanne’s hometown.
