Capelinhos Revisited

Ruth: Returning to see the site of the 1957-58 eruption that both transformed and extended the north end of Faial island is still awesome on a second and third visit. What is less exciting for writers and readers is a second blog on the subject. I will include our original blog from 2019 at the end of this one. 
Shortly after our first visit, the Azores were hit with a hurricane. We are speculating that it was this storm that caused the undercutting and erosion of the cliff trail that used to allow walkers access to the volcano and all the newly formed land. Access now is limited to the area around the lighthouse. We were able to walk down to Comprido Port where the island’s biggest whaling station was located before it was destroyed in the eruption. It is now a stunning swimming spot on calmer days. The number of days is increasing since our last swim. Still hoping.
